On this self-care Sunday- A tribute to Mom I wanted to create a special post to remember this moment forever. For over one month she’s dedicated her life to transforming her health and her mind. Not only has she cut out meat from her diet (for over one month now), but she has also quit smoking exactly one month ago today. We have so much to celebrate!
” I will remain the captain of my soul! I will not step aside from the helm and allow others to take the leadership role over my own body, mind, and eternal soul!”
As I was ending my water fast, about two weeks ago, I asked if she wanted to embark on a detox journey. She’d already cut out meat (Including seafood) dairy, caffeine, and alcoholic beverages. I told her that she would do great and it works to benefit her greatly as she’s making this radical change in her life. She actually said she would do it and so today we begin. The detox is a green smoothie detox for 10 days with no refined sugars, refined or processed foods, limited oils (very limited), and because it’s her very first detox, EVER, I’m modifying it quite a bit for her to have steamed veggies and salad. The goal for the first five days is to inch closer to having a full smoothie day even if it’s only on day 10 she’s able to do a full day of smoothies. What’s even cooler is that I’ll be doing this with her! To be honest I think water fasting is easier. You wake up and drink water all day, it’s a breeze lol. I know some people are reading this like, “what?!?!” But it’s super effortless. I find it easier because I have all of my efforts and energy focused on self-mastery and discovery. Either way I’m alllll about that fasting and detox life. (As you can tell) I’m also about that eat real food life and with occasional junk food because of course I understand having treats and indulges.
I want to share my Mother’s journey because I truly believe if she can do it, anyone can do it. Here’s a little mini-bio of my superhero Mom.
She’s never tried to quit smoking and has been a smoker for over 30 years. Prior to COVID-19 she and her boyfriend of a gazillion years dined out weekly at some of the finest restaurants in St. Louis and they had to have their meat. My Mother would declare her love for chicken and all the sorts meats. She’s always a stroke survivor and has made a full recovery. It hasn’t been the easiest road but she’s made it a point in her life to live to the fullest to the best of her ability.
The past 2 years have been the hardest. She cared for my Great Aunt as she battled and lost her to cancer. Her nephew, my dear cousin, also battled cancer and lost. And her Mother, my Granny, passed away recently after battling colon cancer. I can’t tell you exactly how this has affected her, but there are days I see her in tears missing our loved ones, especially her Mother.
Shortly after my Granny’s passing COVID-19 made it’s way to the US she learned that it affected persons with underlying health conditions and that the meat factories were infected. I saw her make a decision to quit eating meat, we actually made dinner together paying tribute to no more meat. And just a couple of weeks later she would quit smoking. I couldn’t believe what I’ve been witnessing. My Mother is a pretty dope person but this is the absolute proudest moment for me.
Present-day, she’s fussing about the detox lol. It’s pretty hilarious. And to be honest with you, we’ll see if she makes it to tomorrow. The last thing she wants is fresh fruit and if I mention drinking more water one more time I think she’s going to ignore me for the remaining of the day. But ya know I think she got this, my Mother fusses it’s in her nature and she wants to become a healthier person. I just can’t see her quitting now. Stay tuned : )
Either way, she’s come a long way in her health journey and I’m proud of her for even taking one day off from eating processed foods. She’s showing love to herself in one of the most powerful ways ever, and by making the choice to be better day in and day out is an act of love within itself. Cheers to love and health. You got this Mom!
