It’s been over 15 years in my vegan journey and I must say it’s been amazing. I’ve been all kinds of vegan…let’s see I’ve been raw vegan, macrobiotic vegan, straight-edge vegan, detox vegan, gluten-free vegan, grain-free vegan, sugar-free no oil vegan, alkaline vegan, comfort junkie vegan, thin vegan, thick vegan, and currently I’m now the thick+ vegan (more on that in another post). What’s next on my vegan quest might you ask? I am now heading back to being a detox vegan and wanting to be soy-free AND gluten-free for a while.
I was recently admitted to the hospital because I felt awful. I’ve been running a business, attempting to make time for my friends & loved ones, and have had three deaths from close family members within 3 months of one another. It was a stressful time in my life indeed and I thought I was on brink of a stroke with some of the symptoms I’ve read. So I went to the hospital, had many tests done. Luckily, I wasn’t having a stroke, no signs of a stroke, or heart attack because they checked for that too, I had no blockages, and according to the doctors I was in “perfect health.” But something was off….
I went home after a day or so of being in the hospital and prepared a large plate of food. In my defense, they had very little vegan options. I felt fine, prepared for bed, and rested quite well. The next day I arose, went to the gym, and later made some tofu scramble.
Within an hour of eating, I’d begin having some sort of migraine, and pretty sure thought I was going to vomit. Now I wasn’t sure what happened but I was determined to figure it out. I drank ginger tea and water the remaining of the day rethinking my actions. At the time I wasn’t sure what was causing me to feel so awful. I haven’t had migraines since I fasted years ago, it literally got rid of them! I was really concerned and wanted to get to the bottom of it.
A few days go by, and nothing. I felt fine. I decided to pick up some tofu from Whole Foods to make my fav, tofu fries! It was a perfect fix! No oil, great seasonings and spices, and baked to perfection. I had about 6 tofu fries and within minutes, my migraine was back with vengeance! I gasped and thought, “Oh no, it can’t be!?!” I’ve never had a problem with soy. EVER!! I remember my very early days of my vegan journey. I would slice tofu up and toss in a bowl of lettuce and greens with oil and vinegar. It was my go-to for so long and now it’s alllll coming to an end. But, I’ve never had this much soy in my life. It’s in everything! I’d been consuming a ton of comfort foods for months, heavy in soy, heavy in gluten, and heavy in oil. Not sure what’s worse between the three but I’m for sure taking a break from soy and gluten. And it looks like I’m not alone in this issue, according to the FDA, soy is one of the top 8 allergens. Is this an allergen for me, no I don’t believe so. Is this a food sensitivity…well maybe? Either way, I’m completely breaking up with soy. See my breakup letter below.
Dear Soy- My Ever Loving Favorite Food,
It’s been a long time and we’ve made great memories together of many things from mac n chz, fakeq (bbq) cutlets, fried tofu, tofu scramble, tofu fries….and the list goes on. I’m grateful for our years, but now it’s time that we take a break. We can both learn to survive without one another, as I’m so sure another will love you much more than I ever possibly could, especially with the migraines and all. You will be missed dearly. Thank you for providing me with great plant-based protein and sour cream.
Love always,
Miss Fab
